The review that I posted about yesterday can be downloaded at
http://www.joannabriggs.edu.au/pubs/best_practice.php
The overall recommendation is
As breastfeeding confers an important advantage on all children and the incidence of SIDS is very low, it is recommended that health professionals generally advise parents against pacifier use, while taking into account individual circumstances (Grade B)

While looking for this paper I came across the following news report

Pacifiers reduce risk of cot deaths - study -- Yahoo/Reuters
Baby pacifiers can reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), the leading cause of death in babies under a year old, according to new research published. Scientists in the United States found babies who used a pacifier, also known as a "dummy", while they slept had a 90 percent reduced risk of cot death compared to other babies

This must be incorrect! It cannot be that babies who don't use a dummy have a 1000% increased risk of dying from SIDS! but it's amazing that such reports can get around!
