I would hazard a guess that these extreme reactions to the milk surge are related to the rapid drop in progesterone levels, probably mediated by other hormones. During menopause many women react to slight increases in temperature by having hot flashes and sweats. Many symptoms of perimenopause and menopause are linked to a drop in progesterone as well as estrogen levels. During the post-partum period perhaps some mothers overreact to slight decreases in temperature causing shaking chills, kind of the flip side of what they will experience later in life. Just a thought.
