This can be a challenge for an IBCLC who is not liscensed in another
HCP to be accepted in a hospital setting. (Liscensing is not the
same as our certification or even registration-it is given by
governmental regulating boards.) Even when the immediate
"higher-ups" accept the IBCLC title, there are sometimes
administrative issues. I think this reflects our "toddlerhood" as a
profession. Because we don't at this time have a specific degree
program as a pathway for all LC's and are not subject to licensure,
we can be the "odd man out" when it comes to things like taking MD
orders, where we chart, etc. We finally did get non-RN LCs at our
hospital. One had a background in social work. (I think it helped
that she is the wife of one of our OBs.) The other had been a nurse
in her home country, but had not been registered in the US.
Eventually they did rewrite administrative policy to allow HCPs in
non-liscensed roles to write on the progress notes, take MD orders
for consults, etc.
So, yes, there are extra challenges to be accepted in some
institutional settings, but I do see things changing and there are
opportunities to work in other settings if there is currently a
hang-up over the fact that we are not "liscensed".

Winnie
