I have been off lactnet for a while. I've just spent a couple days catching
up and couldn't believe what's going on with the Ad council campaign. Hope
it's not too late. Just fired off 4 letters. I people are still writing, I'd
suggest be brief. I imagine at this time, they are inundated.

Dear Secretary Thompson:

I am writing to urge you to move forward with the Ad Council’s breastfeeding
promotion campaign without watering it down. I have been a nurse and/or
lactation specialist for 24 years. During this time, parents have heard the
benefits of breastfeeding but this has not brought about a significant
change in behavior. During pregnancy, most mothers are asked, “Are you going
to breastfeed or bottle feed?” They are not given much information to help
them make a sound decision but rather equate one method with the other.

The Ad Council will be using messages fine-tuned by varied focus groups. The
time has come to use their approach of presenting the risks of NOT
breastfeeding. I am hopeful that this campaign will help change behavior and
result in healthier babies and mothers through increased breastfeeding
rates.

This is a critical public health campaign. It should not be changed by
corporate interests who are nervous about losing money due to more mothers
choosing to breastfeed or breastfeeding longer.
I work in a New Orleans city hospital (New Orleans is a targeted city for
the ads) and we desperately need to improve infant health here.

Sincerely,

Laurie Wheeler, IBCLC, MN, RN
New Orleans Louisiana
