As a member of a grass roots group in El Paso, TX I recently (yesterday!)
taught a class at a high school here. We (the group) are trying to reach
every HS student through the Health Science department. I approached the
school principals for several schools (other women in the group contacted
other schools) and asked if I could teach a class when it fit into their
schedule.
I was put in contact with the social workers who work with pregnant teens and
also the Home-Ec / Early Childhood Development teacher. The teacher invited
me as a guest speaker. Our goal is to make the class a regular part of the
curriculum for every HS student but the Early Childhood Development class was
a great start.
The students were very receptive. The teacher promotes "breast is best" and
has some positive materials posted. I left more materials for her and the
students. The principal's wife breastfed so he was very enthusiastic.
I think that building consensus from within will lead to broader changes for
the entire school district and, eventually, the city or state mandated
curriculum. How can it be wrong to have a guest speaker? It doesn't have to
be an "official" class but it gets the message to the kids just the same.
Best of luck with this project in other cities. It was a lot of fun teaching
HS students. If we all taught one class each school year how many of the
next generation of parents would we reach?
Sincerely,
Christie Pillado
