Dear Lactnetters,
I am working with a mom with large nipples and a 8.6 oz 24hr old baby.
First time mom. Natural labor and delivery, no complications for mom or
baby. No artificial anythings for baby since birth. First BF within 30
minutes of delivery.
Mom has blisters and is very sore. She has started to pump and cup feed
b/c of pain. Baby can't/doesn't take in more than mom's thick/wide/long
nipple. Mom is determined to bf.
Don't want to go to nipple shields. Mom is Active Duty Army and will be in
three locations in the next four months. She must return to work at 6 wks
PP. Would like to find a workable solution that allows baby to feed at
breast as soon as possible.
Archive search on LACTNET comes up with several messages of "wait until
baby grows into Mom's nipple size" but they were mostly from 1995.
Wondering if anything else has been tried/successful since then or is that
where we are?
Thank you in advance.
I have learned so much from following LACTNET. Much of what I read here is
applicable within the next two weeks for me. Amazing resource.
From sunny but no ocean El Paso,
Christie Pillado
