Dear Friends:
Birthing from Within is a fabulous book to recommend to parents that
includes a discussion of the risks of medication in it. It also addresses
parent's feelings about birth, as birth is a process that lives in the old
brain and can't be taught. However, like breastfeeding, birth can be messed
up by new brain activities. Giving lots of information only feeds the left
brain. Much of the book focuses on ways to integrate right brain activity
into initiation into parenting. It is the only book I would recommend to
parents and I have read lots of them.
The breastfeeding section of the book isn't so hot though as it
recommends routine introduction of a bottle at 3-4 weeks, and suggests dad
giving a bottle at night "so mom can sleep" and also doesn't distinguish
between offering EBM and breastmilk substitutes.
     Warmly,

Nikki Lee RN, MSN, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI, CCE, craniosacral therapy
