Diane asks:
Wait a minute! I thought one of my great privileges as an LC in private
practice was being able to take my orders from the mother instead of fr=
from
the doctor. Why is it so desirable to be under the doctor's authority?

The problem is that when we are operating within a hospital and need an
order from a doc in order to bill insurance, you have to "play by their
rules".
The process should be quite smooth and we have the cooperation of our docs.
When a mom calls us and we set up an outpatient consult, we simply notify
the doc, his office faxes us an order on a premade form and we're covered.
Then the hospital can bill insurance and hopefully it will be covered. The
hitch is in the apparent state regulations as to who can accept an order
from a doc. OTs PTs etc.are licensed by the state and are therefore
"authorized" to take the order.

You folks in private practice don't have to jump through the same hoops that
we in a hospital setting do. One reason is that you aren't having to look
over your shoulder to be sure JCAHO isn't sniffing on your tail with some
new bug under their bonnet! They pick and choose what to make an issue of,
and apparently this is it for the next visit.

Winnie
