We have a level 3 NICU and advise all mothers to clean the pump parts
that are exposed to milk with soap and water only. No sterilization. No
antibacterial soap. We have not seen any increase in infection rate. Our
hosp. delivers over 6500 babies a year. The mothers are given the Universal
kit and use the plastic container that it comes in as the washing basin. In
the hosp., we use Castile soap but suggest any liquid dishwashing soap at
home that she would normally wash dishes with that is not antibacterial.
