In our hospital, when I first raised the issue of short frenulum and
breastfeeding, none of the docs would listen to me because there were no
articles to back it up ( we are evidence-based to a fault) and of course JHL
was not high-impact enough.  Then came the Messner article and the docs said
that it wasn't conclusive enough.  Hmm, ok, so if not, maybe you can think
of a better study, and they did.
So now we are doing a  double blind, randomized study on the effect of
Ankyloglossia on breastfeeding.
The pediatric dentist usually does the clipping and if he is not available,
the head of the NICU does it. We also have a pediatric surgeon who does it
when we need her. Stay tuned for results!! Yesterday we had one that was
amazing!! Not all are, though....especially if they are done later.  We are
getting babies who are referred by LC's and sometimes the clipping does not
solve the problem immediately.
