Susan Hergert posts on this custom, and I agree the thought is a nice one.
Honey, however, can harbor C.botulinum which causes botulism. In infants,
the gut is not always acidic enough to prevent the bacterium from
replicating and producing its toxin in the baby's body, and deaths have
resulted.
I don't know if anyone has researched whether BF gives any protection
against this. The Norwegian Health Board has issued a warning against
giving babies under 12 months, honey in any form. The cases here were in
immigrant children (from unspecified countries) who were given a pacifier
dipped in honey as a soother.
