just checking in from another time zone of the planet jennifer is on. a mom
came to see me on thursday, type I diabetes, baby born 3 weeks early at
8'15", on O2, mom was pumping using only the HAND PUMP at home that they
helpfully gave her at the hospital, using the hospital pump when she was
there. why? she's on medicaid. in colorado medicaid seems to pay for viagra
(according to published budgets) but i am told doesn't pay for anything
related to breastfeeding.

mom is losing her supply and wanted to rent a pump, her mother called to
interrogate me as to a reduced price, to which i agreed. mom came over,
proudly told me baby has ONLY had her milk and not formula at all. is
determined to get this baby to nurse. the baby has an oral aversion, they
"tried" breastfeeding at the hospital and when the baby wouldn't they "got"
the baby to take a bottle. i bet if i could have watched them "get" the baby
to take the bottle a lot of things would be explained. why doesn't anybody
ever get this? it wil probably take several visits to get this fixed, all for
free.

when working with adult patients and tubes or various things must be put down
someone's throat or through the nose, is it done roughly? forcefully? if you
have to help an adult eat, do you force a spoon between their lips if they
open up fast enough or eat at the pace the feeder expects? why is this
cruelty but not if done to babies?

of course, when they showed up to rent the pump, the baby had brand new
clothes, brand new car seat, and the parents were well-dressed, the dad even
had new shoes on. expensive shoes.

signing off from that other planet,

carol brussel IBCLC
