As a parent of multiples, I bought the Babywise book before I understood all
of the controversy. Although, I disagree with many of their philosophies,
some of their techniques have merit, especially when rearing triplets or
more. Anyway, Ezzo has a chapter entitled, "Facts on Feeding," that is very
supportive of breastfeeding. Here's a quote from the book,

"Nothing beats breastfeeding for physiologic benefits to the baby. That's
plain fact. Mother's milk is the complete and perfect food, nothing short
of miraculous. Easily digested, it contains excellent nutrition and
contains the right balance of protein and fat. It also provides the
additional antibodies necessary for building your child's immune system."

. . . it goes on to quote the American Academy of Pediatrics and specifies
all of the benefits of breastfeeding, ie. fewer colds, diarrhea, allergies,
etc.

"There's more good news. Unlike formula which has to be prepared, stored,
warmed, and packed for every outing, breastmilk is always ready, whenever
and wherever you go. And you never need wonder about the milk's freshness.
Inside mother, it won't go bad. Breastfeeding has many health benefits for
mother as well, such as helping to speed the return of the uterus to its
normal size and shape. It also decreases the risk of breastcancer and
facilitates easier postpartum weightloss."

Of course, where Ezzo differs is in his philosophy of scheduled feedings
vs.. demand feedings. Ezzo states on page 63 that, "A convenient sampling
of over 240 mothers following the Parent Directed Feeding (PDF) principles
demonstrated that 88% of mothers who start with the program breast-feed, and
80% of those moms breast-feed exclusively with no formula supplement. And
while the national average was 21.6% of mothers breast-feeding into the
fifth month, a full 70% of PDF mothers continued into the fifth and sixth
months."

I, personally, am neither pro-Ezzo or anti-Ezzo, but since I had the book, I
thought I'd share some of the content.
