I have not seen the studies that suggest that supplementation with DHA helps
with postpartum depression. But, the first question one should ask oneself
about these studies is who will gain financially from supplementation of DHA.
I believe there are food sources for DHA and some of them are cold water
fish oils and egg yolks. I do believe that the new supplements with DHA are
coming from the biotech industry and the DHA is not coming from a food
source. I believe that the DHA is genetically engineered from a
microorganism called Cryphecodinium cohnii. To see a web site that talks
about how the biotech industry extracts the DHA-containing oils go to
http://www.nf-2000.org/secure/Fair/S1015.htm

These oils are also being used in infant formulas that are marketed in Europe
and Asia. The decision has not yet been made by the FDA on whether these
oils will be used in the USA. These oils have pharmaceutical applications.
There is increasing commercial interests for development of these products
with "new" micro-organisms. So, of course, there will be a push to have
everyone use them, using studies as a way to market their new supplements to
both infants and adults. I believe that there ought to be labeling laws so
that consumers have some idea whether a product is genetically engineered or
not. Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
