A Mom on our postpartum unit who has sickle cell anemia and got very sick
was put on Warfarin and told by the OB not to breastfeed for six months.
"So I'll have to pump and dump for 6 months" she told me. We rarely get
moms who BF for 6 months, let alone pump and dump. I nearly went into
orbit....
The baby was in the NICU, 34 weeks gestation, breastfeeding well at breast
before Mom got sick.
The NP and I checked out the drug which was OKd by AAP for BF Moms. The
attending pediatrician was dubious but we twisted her arm and she agreed.
Mom immediately resumed BF. Was this OK? Hale makes it sound a little
scary... Dr Jack? Any comments or concerns?
