I work a couple of hours per week at a local hospital as an LC, and see, as
I'm sure you all do, many sleepy babies who are near impossible to arouse.

Does any one have an opinion on what is a "normal" (and safe) amount of time
an infant can fall into a deep sleep in the immediate 24-48 hours after birth?
I ask this question assuming that all vitals are normal, blood sugar is ok,
etc. At what point do staff at your hospitals begin to worry and suggest the
use of supplementation? WE have some docs who worry lots and others who shrug
it off for the first 24 hours.

I personally don't worry too much when the baby is healthy and not showing
signs of dehydration. Especially with the babes who nurse very well in the
first 6-8 hours and then won't nurse well at all, falling into a deep sleep.
The moms do worry though, as does the nursing staff. Any opinions? I'd really
like to know your thoughts!
