Barbara said, "Since all over the planet so many
mothers must, or feel they must, or want to return to
their careers, our job as LCs is to advocate for the
right of the baby to continue to breastfeed. I see
some of the anti-bottle propaganda in the US as a
not-so-subtle effort to control behavior in favor of
attachment parenting."

Well said,Barbara. As a mom who has often wished she
could return to work, :-) I certainly would prefer
that attitude than "any bottle will kill
breastfeeding". It is much more realistic, but should
be accompanied by discussions of the warning signs of
of nursing strikes, refusal, etc. (I believe I am an
attached parent, so one can't assume that attached
parents always enjoy staying home. )

I think the attitude of the caregiver and the mother
toward the bottles can make a big difference. I was
once consulted by a woman who wanted to get her
pumping improved, but would give her baby bottles at
home. Her reason was that she was "fascinated by the
baby's ability to take the bottle." I suspect the
baby knew that. :-) Another mom told me that it was
"cute" when her son tried to latch on nursing in the
same way as he took the bottle. She had no idea that
could cause problems in the future.
