While I would always recommend the full hospital grade pumps for moms
pumping for infants not yet "ready" to breastfeed, many moms already come to
the hospital with the PIS in hand. They have either gotten them as a shower
gift or bought them themselves ahead of time. Understandably, such a mom
may be reluctant to put out additional money to rent since she already has
what she has heard is the best pump available.

I would explain to her that the PIS works well when the milk supply is
established and baby is nursing directly some of the time. I would point
out that for most moms, it isn't the best choice for establishing a supply
and providing milk to a baby not yet nursing. In spite of this, some would
insist on trying the PIS first. In these cases, I would encourage using the
hospital grade pump while still in the hospital, and bringing the kit with
her when she visits baby so she can use in when here. In addition, we would
keep in touch with her to be sure pumping was proceeding as expected. We
would tell her from the start that if she wasn't getting enough with the PIS
she should definitely consider renting, at least until baby is doing most of
the feeding directly. I found that for some moms, the PIS worked just fine
while others did need the Lactina.
