A WIC Client came into our office today.
Mother had a premature baby born about 3 months early and was pumping.
Mom developed mononucleosis and was told by neonatologist to stop
bf/pumping.
She said she is not taking any meds for mono.
I told mom I had never heard that mono was a reason to stop bf.
Not being 100% sure of myself, I suggested she get a second opinion.
Mom said she HAD had a 2nd opinion from someone at a prominent pediatric
hospital.
Second opinion was also to stop bf.
Mom seemed rather upset when I suggested I did not think she needed to
stop.
She stopped 2 weeks ago.
I suppose there may be more info she did not volunteer to tell me -
perhaps she was exhausted and did not WANT to pump anymore, so dr said
"it's ok to stop".
Is mononucleosis a reason to stop bf?
Thanks!

Sincerely,
Elaine Mazgelis, RD, IBCLC
