Dear Lactnet Friends:

The major reason for poor results on the metabolic screening, done on all
babies before hospital discharge, is that the little circles weren't all
filled in correctly on the test paper.

Infant's heel is pricked and the blood is to drip freely, filling the
little circles. If the infant is crying or cold, if the staff person is
squeezing and milking the little foot to get the blood to flow, results may
be faulty and a repeat test required.

This is the major reason for poor results of which I am aware.
