Thanks, Robin, I kind of thought it was something like that.
I have also worked with babies who have aspirated Mec, some got terribly ill.
(Never heard of Mec "getting in through the U Cord", though. ;) ) One, a
number of years ago, was transferred from Loyola to Children's Memorial,
because they thought they might have to put the baby on an ECMO.
(Children's had one, Loyola didn't then.) This baby was as near death as any I
have seen in 20 years. Luckily, the baby ended up not needed the ECMO, but
he was in NICU at Children's for months (which at the time had NO IBCLCs, and
the mom was beside herself, because even as he recovered no one could help
her there. "Don't worry about the breastfeeding until you get home." She was
continually told. Talk about head banging.)
My client/friend's baby did not get sick, nor do I believe he aspirated. But, I
had never heard of Mec getting into the U Cord. The mom kept showing me
the cord stump, which had a little green Mec on it, (the baby was born
covered with it, obviously) while explaining, and I didn't want to say anything,
as my specialty is Lactation. But, it didn't sound right.
After this is resolved, I'll explain it to her. My guess is the cord was cut quickly
to get the baby to the Peds table, not to prevent Mec from entering that way.
Thank you for straightening it out. (Mom's doc is a Resident and has done all
of 40 births, and doesn't have the best bedside manner.....yet, there's still
hope, I hope.)
