There's a great article in American Family Physician (July 1, 2001 issue)
on drugs in breastfeeding mothers. For those of us who interact with
Family Physicians, it's a great quotable reference. Available online at
http://www.aafp.org/afp/20010701/119.html.
It talks about general pharmacologic principles, then gives examples of
safe meds in several categories that might be needed in breastfeeding
women, from antihypertensives to cold remedies. It also lists the drugs
absolutely contraindicated (very short list), and explains why the PDR is
NOT the source to use, but that docs should look in the Hale books because
they cite the actual research.
I believe the lead author is a member of the Pennsylvania BF Coalition.
Becky Saenz, MD, IBCLC
