It's because at many institutions they aren't taught anything about
breastfeeding in Med School or residency, other than what's in the formula
company literature!!! I recently tried to propose a senior med student
elective in Breastfeeding Medicine, but was vetoed by the chairman of the
Curriculum Cmte (a Ped Allergist, by the way) because the 12 new
consults/month, plus weekly follow-ups on all of those weren't "sufficient
patient volume" to justify the experience for students. AAARRRGH!!
Becky Saenz, MD, IBCLC
who continues to coordinate a resident rotation in Breastfeeding Medicine,
and will even have an out-of-state resident next month!
