Thought I'd put in my 2 cents in on the goat milk thread.   PLEASE read what
I learned.   I recently had a baby and mom with insufficient milk supply.   It
took her 8 WEEKS to get her full supply.. She then exclusively breastfed for
8 months and continued breastfeeding until 18 months.   She was very against
formula and had heard of using goat milk.   I remembered hearing about the lack
of folic acid so I decided to call the company, Myenberg Goat Milk Co. and
talk to someone in R & D.   The very helpful information she gave to me was,
"the canned and fresh goat milk we market today has the folic acid added to it so
that is no longer a problem.   The problem is that goats milk has a composite
load too heavy for a baby's kidneys and it is for this reason that the milk
MUST be diluted with water and then carbs are added back in by using molasses
or brown rice syrup.   This way the calories, carbs, proteins, etc., are OK for
baby and there is no danger to the kidneys."   Myenberg was very nice about
sending me the info and explaining the dangers of straight goats milk.   They
also sent the recipe for making the formula.
A more recent client also had insufficient supply for 12 weeks..... It amazes
me how long it can take to get a full supply and how dedicated some moms are.
They just won't give up!!!   It is heart warming.  On the other hand, I had a
mom call and say she quit at 2 days because the baby cried too much.   I
asked her what her plan was before she gave birth and she said to breastfeed no
matter what!   I asked her if she wanted to try again... We got the baby to the
breast, feeding well.   I hope it lasts!!
