Just to clarify...the five year old boy didn't say anything where the mom could hear, and it was said more in surprise then disgust, he is just realizing that not all babys/kids are breastfed and if they are they don't usually get to nurse into toddlerhood.

He had also never seen a beast shaped bottle and was just caught off guard by a new mommy not nursing her baby..................that along with "stupid" being the word of the week (which is not allowed in his family but he is quite enamored with it at this moment) lead to the choice of words he used.

We did discuss that there are some mommy's who don't nurse for various reasons (and that we don't use the word stupid, especially towards someone.) It was just interesting to see that he had made the same observation I had, (I had said nothing to him at all) and just chose different words to describe the irony (I overheard the mom saying that she chose to bottle feed this baby as she just wouldn't possibly have the time to bfeed her third child.)

There are certainly legitimate reasons a mom may not have baby at breast, this wasn't meant to down play their issues and inabilities to nurse at breast. This was just to point out all the different ways our culture will allow something similar to breastfeeding but Golly gee don't let us see a breast with a baby feeding in public!!

Thanks,
Rachelle
