I am a Belgian health care professional (nurse) and graduated this year as
a lactation consultant. In order to write a paper, I tried to have a
critical and evidence based research of the breastfeeding management in our
organisation (Kind en Gezin, health care office for the flemish part of
Belgium). My conclusions of the paper have been subject of positive
discussions at the highest level of our organisation. Among other things I
proposed to have one lactation consultant in each team of health nurses and
the other members of the team should follow a 40-hours education (type
WHO). The members of the board of directors are investigating the
possibility of this proposal (practical, financial, etc). But I don't want
to wait with actions for a better bf-management until the board has decided
and the staff has finished more education. A lot of colleagues are very
interested in a better bf-management and contact me with questions about bf
and with 'difficult bf-cases'.In the staff I feel a large need of advice
and accompaniment in helping breastfeeding mothers.
That's why I proposed to have already some lactation consultants to advise
health nurses, until we finally reach the ideal situation of a lc in every
team (this will take probably several years!).
My management director asked me recently to make a proposal of the way I
want to implement lactation consultants in the primary health care.
So here's my question: are you a nurse in primary health care and lactation
consultant, please contact me. I want to know how you work, how many time
you need for the lc, are you available only for the staff of nurses or do
you have consultants for breastfeeding clients as well? Are you reachable
by mobile phone and if you are, do you have strict consultationhours? Do
you work with voice mail, with E-mail...
I'd appreciate a lot if you would offer some time in advising me!
