Jennifer,
I can really relate to this story. My daughter weaned abruptly at 5
PM on Tuesday, March 1 in 1968 at the age of 11 months. I was
devastated. (I still kid her about the fact that the Baha'i fast
starts on March 2nd and she was just telling me I needed to observe
it so she quit since nursing moms are exempt!) It was only later
that I learned about nursing strikes and the idea of nursing baby
when not fullly awake (the baby, that is). What was interesting was
that at her regular check-up a couple days leter, the doc discovered
she had an ear infection! In spite of her being breastfed with no
supplements and solids after 6 months, she had a number of them in
her first year. Perhaps because of nursing she had milder cases,
but this wasn't the only time we had no clue before seeing the doc
that there was an infection. I suspect she refused to nurse because
it hurt her ear when she did so. (She definitely wasn't really
ready to wean, I figured out later. as she didn't give up chewing on
pencils until she was 7!)
Since then, I have always suggested ruling out an ear infection when
there is a nursing strike and on a few occasions mom either states
she already knows there is one and it's being treated or when she
checks, the baby does have one. I also wonder about the teething.
It may well aggravate the aching when baby nurses. Using teething
lotion or some other "numbing" agent on baby's gums before nursing
might help if this is the case.

Winnie
