My own little guy was on a nursing strike last month for several days when he
had a urinary tract unfection. Luke would only sleep sitting up on me for
several nights and refused to nurse day or night. He was 19 months old then and
had a fever, no ear infection, or strep detected. Luckily, they did take a
urine sample when he still wasn't feeling better and he did have a uti. After
doing research on uti, I'm surprised that more babies aren't being tested for
uti when there is no other explanation for a fever. Even after one uti in a
baby further testing is recommended by the AAP. Our Luke had a kidney
ultrasound and a VCUG (dye in catheter to look for reflux of urine to the kidneys)
done last month and he does have grade 2 urinary reflux. The Urologist we saw
today told me all about his wife's nursing problems and that LLL was very big in
Montreal :). Luke nursed through most of our appt. today so we could hear
the doctor and keep Luke from trying to put his coat on to leave! So sometimes
a nursing strike might be because of a uti!
