There appear to be other dynamics at play.  I doubt that it is due to
reduced fat bodies.  And there are plenty of mites in South African
colonies--although they typically don't grow to high infestation rates.

It's not clear in which species DWV originally evolved.  In some Hawaiian
islands without varroa, DWV was detected in other insect species, so it
doesn't require varroa to be introduced.
