"Musashi" provided what seems to me to be the best way (use CO2) to kill
a colony of bees without destroying the combs.

We had to kill a great many colonies and used methyl chloroform (no
longer available). The bees became immediately anaesthetized. By keeping
all openings closed up, they they suffocated. CO2 is a good alternative,
since just about anyone can get a supply --- either by using dry ice, by
purchasing a tank of CO2, or by simply using a CO2 fire extinguisher.
