Randy was anxious to get a sample of Nosema apis, for examination
microscopically as all the samples he had had checked out were Nosema c.

I sent Randy Robb a sample of bee conglomerate on a microscope slide
together with a small amount of water suspension taken from a sample bees
dating back to 2002 or thereabouts. I was fairly certain that the sample
would be Nosema apis.

Randy sent the sample to Robb for checking and though the amount of DNA was
minimal the PCR gave a strong signal for Nosema apis and a very weak signal
for Nosema ceranae (could have been background contamination as the lab was
doing a lot of Nosema ceranae).

We both made comparison slides which were circulated to Randy, Robb & Juan
(might have been more in the circle). Side by side there were observable
differences. And with his experience Randy got good at telling the
difference. I am not so sure that I could do so.

A sample of bees was sent to the Irish laboratory in Kinsealy Co. Dublin and
was sent to UK for checkingby PCR. The result was Nosema ceranae. That was
about two years ago. There is nothing to say that it was not in the country
for a longer period.

Robb got his samples a couple of years back. But, good to know, I think -
wouldn't wish N. cernae on anyone. Jerry
