Apologies for being unclear!
By "stock" I'm only referring to the bloodlines of the pest species, some
small proportion of which may exhibit resistance to a pesticide.
Repeated application of an efficacious pesticide repeatedly confers an
increased fitness value to these pest bloodlines that are resistant to the
pesticide.
Thus, the resistant bloodlines eventually numerically outcompete the
non-resistant bloodlines.
