All our hives have either roman numerals and/or some sort of design, and/or some colour markings. We've looked for but not noticed bee drift. We have noticed bees checking out different hives close by, but heading off affirmatively for another hive, hopefully theirs.
 
Not sure I agree that bees can count, but sure do believe that they can distinguish hive exterior designs.
