I think we have to include the point that many of our "mentors" deliberately give misinformation, in order to decrease competition.  I have been given plenty of this faulty information in my short beekeeping career, and have had hives die and have lost money because of it.

I would encourage any new beekeepers to seek mentors who operate hives a few hundred miles away, in order to avoid some of this potential conflict of interest.
