I thought that they preferred brood comb, because they eat the stub cocoon left behind in the cell.  They can be raised on cereal flakes (bran?), often for fishing bait, and an acquarium tank of them will make some noise as they "eat", as well as produce a certain odor.  I have seen their tracks in honey supers left out, but the damage seems to be minimized by the lack of food in same.
