I read about CPB vacuums.  A rather safe technique for bees and people that's supposedly effective.  Application cost should be a bit less than conventional insecticides, I'd think..

Birds like finches and toads eat lots of CPBs.  Ladybugs eat CPB eggs.  I have several toads in my vegetable beds every year and they do a good job of controlling slugs etc.  They look rather fat and happy.

And according to the U. of Kentucky, potatos can afford up to 30% foliage loss without a tuber yield reduction.
