...i'm bringing this up just for thought...

1.  _if_ feeding sugar drastically affects the microbial culture in the hive and/or individual bee (and given the shift of ph from 3.5-4.5 with honey, and 6.0 with syrup, i think it's a given that the ph difference alone is assured to change the makeup/balance of the culture...this is a more likely assumption than one that assumes this ph difference has no effect on the microbes).

2.  _if_ ccd afflicted colonies are fed regularly (and a recent post assumed that feeding with sucrose should be something that helps the bees deal with ccd).

3.  _if_ ccd has something to do with the microbial culture in the  hive.

then:

4.  adding ascorbic acid to the feed should bring its ph down towards that of honey.

obviously, ph isn't the only difference between honey and syrup...but it's an easy one to measure, and one that we know will affect the microbes greatly.
