Is this an isolated incidence with this particular colony or is citronella a
hot button" as far as honey bees are concerned?

I sometimes put herbs into my smoker to make the old sacking that is my usual fuel smell a bit better. A favourite is Pineapple Mayweed but I use others when available. Once I used sage ( Salvia Officianalis) and the bees poured out of the hive and attacked the smoker. A friend with bees in her roof says that on 2 occasions people working nearby have been attacked when using WD40.
