> According to Dr Thomas honeybee is the commonly accepted construction of the word if you live in England or Europe but in the US the appropriate construction is honey bee.

This is true now, but was not always so. For example:

The honey bee, its natural history, physiology, and management
by Edward Bevan.
Published: London : Van Voorst, 1827.

The honey bee : its natural history, anatomy, and physiology.
Cowan, T. W. (Thomas William), 1840-1926.
Published: London : Houlston, 1890

also, "honey-bee" was used for a time:

The honey-bee and hive.
By Wooster A. Flanders.
Published: Northfield, Vt., Woodworth & Gould, printers. 1854.
