"It can't be drafty, otherwise the cold air blowing through there will make
the heating problem just very, very - so costly for the bees that they would
burn through their honey supply".

This makes me think about screened bottom boards and whether they're a good
idea in winter. This is one of the things people argue about at our local
club. I've sent hives through winter with screened boards and traditional
boards, and haven't really seen a difference in mortality. But I have to
wonder: if Seeley had put out nest boxes equal in every other way but
screened bottoms, would any swarms have chosen the screened versions?
