Actually, this works, but not using ultrasonic frequencies.  

We can instantly 'freeze' the movements of all bees on several frames for 2-3 minutes.  Just haven't figured out how to extend the time of immobilization and the need for a battery-powered device.  Still, it's fun to play with; I'll have to produce a video this summer just for kicks.  I don't really see it becoming the go-to answer. 

For my serious work, we'll continue to pursue acoustics and infra-red imaging to REDUCE the need to open hives as often (i.e., providing electronic 'eyes and ears' to improve detection of health, pest, and pesticide problems without as much hive disturbance).  NOTE, what our methods and  devices will do is to tell the beekeeper WHICH ONES to open immediately and visually inspect - they don't imply NO INSPECTION.
