My wife asked this out-of-the-box-thinking question: Could it be that Africanized bees are not more aggressive but produce a more potent alarm pheromone that keeps them riled up longer?

I would say no, I have had Africanized hives right next to European and the Europeans do not get more aggressive due to pheromones in the air, but rile the Europeans up and the AHB go wild.
