Yes, but my temperature probe reading of 58F (at the top center of the hive)
when the outside air temperature is 5F (it's the same at 25F OAT) means that
they ARE heating the hive.  They ARE wasting heat.  Would a smaller box or a
better insulated box waste less heat?

 

Other questions arise: How big should the chimney (the top entrance in this
analogy) be?  Is there even a need for a chimney?  Do they waste less heat
if their house is smaller?  Do they waste less heat (and therefore burn less
fuel) if their house is better insulated?  Is burning less fuel better than
burning more fuel?
