I used to confuse EFB and PMS frequently. For me the thing that did the trick was looking at the color of the dying larvae. Larvae dying from EFB show different colors, like a weird greenish grey, whereas PMS/virus deaths are more white. Also, the visibility of the tracheal tubes in the larvae dying from EFB make them look like orange slices to me.
