Trevor Weatherhead speaks of two advantages to importing Australian bees,  
but doesn't mention the major disadvantage: their drones disseminate  
non-resistant genes widely in the USA, which tends to suppress the development  of 
resistant stock, undermining both the feral population and US apiaries'  
efforts to breed in resistance.  Certainly re-queening quickly with  locally 
raised resistant stock would help, but how often does that happen in  
practice?
