Formic pads can give off annoying and potentially harmful fumes when being handled on warm days. They can also release too much acid too fast if placed into a hive on a warm day. In such an instance, the bees also may not have time to move away from and adjust to the pads without harm.

Beekeepers sometimes can't pick the ideal moment to apply, especially if applying formic over apiaries spread over a wide area. Therefore, it useful to know that the pads can be placed in buckets in a deep freeze until departure for the field. On arrival, they can be placed on the hive without much immediate off-gassing, allowing the beekeeper to work in comfort and allowing the bees time to adjust before the pads give off much acid.
