HONEYBEE DEMOCRACY
By Thomas D. Seeley.
Princeton University Press. 273 pages. $29.95.

Dr. Seeley is an engaging guide. His enthusiasm and admiration for honeybees is infectious. His accumulated research seems truly masterly, doing for bees what E. O. Wilson did for ants.

“Some have said,” he writes in conclusion, “that honeybees are messengers sent from the gods to show us how we ought to live: in sweetness and in beauty and peacefulness.” Ever the scientist rather than the theologian or business management guru, he adds: “Whether or not this is true, I believe the story of house-hunting by honeybees can inspire the light of amazement about these beautiful little creatures, a light that I hope has shined through each page of this book.”
