First time beekeeper, replacing one that's leaving to become a full time mommy.

We lost a weak hive this weekend.

I have a question on something I saw on a brood frame. There were several
emerging workers, the head poking out of the cell. Perhaps 7 or 8 on each
side, but dead. I also saw a dead worker head in a cell.

I've had a chance to see a worker emerge and don't remember any workers
helping her emerge, so why would emerging workers die in such a position?

Thanks in advance,
Howard
