Because it gets dirty, sweaty, scratched, and harder to see through than
the veil.
 
Do you wear eyeglasses?  A beekeeper's worst affliction except a bad
back.  I swear every season that I will start wearing contacts, but what
with astigmatism and tri-focals, that doesn't seem very practical.
