This paper has unnecessarily difficult-to-follow materials and methods. The downloaded material does have the text Randy quoted. I have to say that I have no love for the abbreviated paper format now popular in Science.

But....and here is the confusing part....that supplemental text (in which a total of 9 colonies were monitored for laying queens) refers to a study done in 2015. This corresponds to Figure 2B in the published version...hygenic behavior.

The published text does not make it clear which year each part of the rest of the data comes from, except for Figure 2B.

The N values are supposed to represent the number of subjects (i.e. colonies). The N values in the remainder of the data in the published paper are consistent with the number of colonies used in 2014 (55). The N values never go higher than 55 and are all above 34 (except for the larval feeding studies which have much higher N values)....including the queen data in Figure 2D with an N value of 54.... so I think it is time to contact the authors to clear this up.

Christina
